Target Audience and Audeience Theory

The target audience for our music video are young people, aged between 14 and 25. We believe our prodict is not gender discriminative, and it will appeal to both male and female audiences due to the non specific lyrics and representations that some videos offer. For example, Beynoce's song "About a Boy" will obviously be targeted at a female audience as they will be able to relate with the ideas put forward in the song. The nature of our music, it having unspecific themes running thorough will help us atract both genders.

We would like to challenge the stereotypes of audiences that we can appeal to in terms of race and background. Generally, alternative rock has a lower too middle class caucasian following. We would like to widen the scope of people we are marketing our product too, if succesful in this we are potentially increasing our target audience and have the potential of increasing revenue of record sales etc. This could be achieved by marketing our product more widely, using advertising methods that would reach less conventional audiences.

In terms of audiecne theories, we believe that our target market fits Young and Rubicans audience class of "REFORMERS", this group is defined by the self asteem and self fufillment. This fits are target audience as it implies that the audience is not following a trend as is choosing the product as it challenges mainstream conventions and representations, which is exactly who we are aiming our product at. We believe this will be mainly students and young people who are probably not working in a mainstream job, such as aritists, musicians and people who are not sheep to the latest trends. However we are aware that we do not wont to alienate others from our music and understand that we also have to reach the wider public audience.

Roland and Barthes narratives codes can be loosely applied to our music video, the symbolic code would best fit out product as we intend to use props and our general mise en scene to inspire connetations of the 1950's and a vintage feel. Using furniture and setting up our location to do so.

Although we are aware of other media theories such as Propp's charecter roles and Todrov's equilibrium thoeries; they are hard to apply to our music video as there is not a narrative within them to apply it too.
